What is an R-phrase?
Set of phrases used to indicate the hazardous properties of a chemical
- international system for classification, packaging, labeling, information provision
> Risk phrases = R-phrases refer to:
   - health effects on humans
    - hazards for the environment
    - risks of fire & explosion
                                    R20 – Harmful by inhalation
                                        R25 – Toxic if swallowed
                                       R68 – Possible risk of irreversible effects
How can you find R-phrases?
- match up descriptive phrases found on chemical labels or MSDS
  with the table in CM Guide (Tool 4: pgs 76-81)
- search chemical name on Internet sites that provide free international MSDS
Unlike in Europe, North American MSDSs do not specify R-phrases
